Creative Approach – Assessing Daylight & Thermal Comfort at Modern Houses

Modern homes often struggle with inadequate daylight and reliance on mechanical heating and cooling, driving up utility costs. Passive design principles offer a sustainable solution, minimizing the need for artificial lighting and climate control systems. By harnessing natural elements, passive design ensures thermal comfort, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse emissions. In a group project, five students will brainstorm ways to optimize daylight and thermal comfort in a selected modern house, conducting fieldwork and utilizing relevant phone apps for data collection.

Case Study – Green Buildings in Malaysia

Green buildings are gaining traction, but their importance isn't always recognized in public opinion. To understand their impact, this assignment calls for a case study. In groups of five, students will analyze accredited "green" buildings, focusing on environmental strategies. They'll choose one building for in-depth study, ideally visiting it for research. The findings will be presented on an A1 poster and in a one-minute video for social media sharing.

Self-Reflection

Reflecting on my experience in the Architecture and Environment course, it's been a journey filled with unexpected discoveries and personal growth. Initially, I must admit, I struggled to find enthusiasm for the subject. Perhaps it was the timing, coinciding with the festive season of the Lunar New Year, or perhaps it was my initial lack of understanding about the course content. However, as the course progressed, I began to grasp the significance of how the environment profoundly influences architectural design.

When the first assignment was released, I found myself at a loss, unsure of where to begin. Thankfully, I had a supportive groupmate who patiently guided me through the process, clarifying the objectives and helping me understand what was expected. I'm grateful for her assistance, as it opened my eyes to the importance of collaboration and seeking help when needed.

In the second assignment, I was tasked with recreating diagrams using software like Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, tools I had little experience with. Initially, I felt intimidated by the responsibility, fearing that my efforts might not meet the standards of my groupmates. However, I recognized this as an opportunity for personal growth and took it upon myself to learn. Turning to online tutorials, I familiarized myself with the software and diligently recreated the diagrams. To my relief and satisfaction, they were approved by my groupmates, demonstrating the value of stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges.

In conclusion, this course has not only expanded my understanding of architecture but has also taught me valuable lessons in perseverance, collaboration, and adaptability. As I look back on my journey, I'm filled with gratitude for the support of my peers and the opportunity to learn and grow in ways I hadn't anticipated. Moving forward, I'm excited to apply the insights gained from this course to future endeavors, knowing that the lessons learned will continue to shape my personal and professional development.
