BUILDING CONSTRUCTION & MATERIALS
(BLD 61604)
This module is designed to teach students the basics of building construction and the materials used in small to medium-sized building projects. It focuses on understanding the principles of building elements, covering both the substructure and superstructure, as well as familiar construction materials such as concrete, masonry, timber, metal, and glass. Each material will be examined in terms of its manufacturing process, properties, and common uses in construction. To achieve the module's goals, students will participate in continuous assessments, including assignments and tutorial activities.
PROJECT 1-: Material Experience in Architecture ——
Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications (Grouping)
In a group of SEVEN (7) students, our task is to conduct a detailed case study on an intriguing building located in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The goal is to identify and evaluate 5 architectural and 2 structural building materials used in the building. One of these materials should be highlighted for its significant experiential impact on users, and you must provide a detailed illustration of its installation process. The findings will be presented on a single A1 size board, which should include the building's historical background, images, and details of the selected materials, a focused analysis of the experiential material, relevant building images (such as floor plans and elevations), a conclusion on the material applications, and references.
PROJECT 2 - CONSTRUCTION DETAILS —— INTEGRATION WITH ADII
In this assignment, which integrates with Architectural Design II, each student is required to demonstrate their understanding of construction principles through manual drawing, forming a crucial aspect of their final ADII project. The main objective is for students to develop a construction section detail that spans from the roof to the foundation, accompanied by a physical model representing the unique design of their ADII project. Additionally, each student must create a specific special detail as part of the assignment.

REFLECTION
"At first, I found the Building Material and Construction course both difficult and uninteresting, as the technical details seemed overwhelming and disconnected from my interests. However, as I worked through the assignment, particularly developing a detailed construction section and creating a physical model, I began to see the practical value of what I was learning. Manual drawing and designing a special detail challenged me, but they also helped me appreciate the importance of precision and creativity in construction. What initially felt tedious turned into a rewarding experience that deepened my understanding and sparked a genuine interest in the subject."
